LOHENGRIN Das süsse Lied verhallt; wir sind allein, zum erstenmal allein, seit wir uns sahn. Nun sollen wir der Welt entronnen sein, kein Lauscher darf des Herzens Grüssen nahn. Elsa, mein Weib! Du süsse, reine Braut! Ob glücklich du, das sei mir jetzt vertraut!	Music Music	LOHENGRIN The sweet song fades; we are alone, alone for the first time since we met. Now we are cut off from the world, no eavesdropper shall hear the salutations of the heart. Elsa, my wife! Sweet, pure bride! Tell me now whether you are happy!
ELSA Wie wär ich kalt, mich glücklich nur zu nennen, besitz ich aller Himmel Seligkeit! Fühl ich zu dir so süss mein Herz entbrennen, atme ich Wonnen, die nur Gott verleiht.	Music	ELSA How unfeeling it would be of me to say I was merely happy, when I am filled with heavenly joy! As I feel my heart go out to you, I breathe delights that God alone bestows.
LOHENGRIN (feurig) Vermagst du, Holde, glücklich dich zu nennen, gibst du auch mir des Himmels Seligkeit! (zärtlich) Fühl ich zu dir so süss mein Herz entbrennen, atme ich Wonnen, die nur Gott verleiht; - Wie hehr erkenn ich unsrer Liebe Wesen! Die nie sich sahn, wir hatten uns geahnt; war ich zu deinem Streiter auserlesen, hat Liebe mir zu dir den Weg gebahnt: Dein Auge sagte mir dich rein von Schuld - mich zwang dein Blick, zu dienen deiner Huld. ELSA Doch ich zuvor schon hatte dich gesehen, in sel'gem Traume warst du mir genaht; als ich nun wachend dich sah vor mir stehen, erkannt ich, dass du kamst auf Gottes Rat. Da wollte ich vor deinem Blick zerfliessen, gleich einem Bach umwinden deinen Schritt, gleich einer Blume duftend auf der Wiesen, wollt ich entzückt mich beugen deinem Tritt. Ist dies nur Liebe? - Wie soll ich es nennen, dies Wort, so unaussprechlich wonnevoll, wie ach! dein Name - den ich nie darf kennen, bei dem ich nie mein Höchstes nennen soll!		ELSA But I had already seen you, for you had come to me in a wondrous dream; when in waking hours I saw you standing before me, I knew that you had come following God's counsel. I wanted to dissolve before your gaze, like a stream I wanted to wind around your feet, like a sweet-smelling flower in the meadow to incline entraptured towards the fall of your feet. Is this merely love? What shall I call this word, inexpressibly divine as your name - that I, alas, may never know, that I may never use to address my most revered!
LOHENGRIN (schmeichelnd) Elsa!		LOHENGRIN Elsa!
ELSA Wie süss mein Name deinem Mund entgleitet! (etwas zögernd) Gönnst du des deinen holden Klang mir nicht? Nur, wenn zur Liebesstille wir geleitet, sollst du gestatten, dass mein Mund ihn spricht.		ELSA How sweet the sound of my name from your lips! Will you not grant me the fair sound of yours? Only when we are led to the stillness of love shall you allow my lips to pronunce it.
LOHENGRIN Mein süsses Weib!		LOHENGRIN My dear wife!
ELSA - Einsam, wenn niemand wacht; nie sei der Welt er zu Gehör gebracht!		ELSA All alone, when everyone is asleep; never shall it be brought to the ears of the world!
LOHENGRIN (sie freundlich umfassend und durch das offene Fenster auf den Blumengarten deutend) Atmest du nicht mit mir die süssen Düfte? O wie so hold berauschen sie den Sinn! Geheimnisvoll sie nahen durch die Lüfte, fraglos geb ihrem Zauber ich mich hin. - (mit erhobener Stimme) So ist der Zauber, der mich dir verbunden, da als ich zuerst, du Süsse, dich ersah; nicht deine Art ich brauchte zu erkunden, dich sah mein Aug, - mein Herz begriff dich da. Wie mir die Düfte hold den Sinn berücken, nahn sie mir gleich aus rätselvoller Nacht: - (feurig) So deine Reine musste mich entzücken, traf ich dich auch in schwerer Schuld Verdacht.	Music	LOHENGRIN (embracing her lovingly and pointing through the open window to the flower-filled garden) Can you not smell these sweet fragrances? How wondrously they delight the senses! Misteriously they approach through the air, and unquestioningly I give myself over to theis magic. Thus was the magic that joined me to you, when I first saw you, O fair one; I did not need to ask where you came from, my eyes saw you - and my heart understood at once. Just as these fragrances wondrously beguile my sense, though thay approach me from the enigmatic night, so did your innocence enchant me, even if I did find you suspected of a great crime.
(Elsa birgt ihre Beschämung, indem sie sich demütig an ihn schmiegt)		(Elsa hides her embarrassment as she humbly presses herself to him)
ELSA Ach, könnt ich deiner wert erscheinen, müsst ich vor dir nicht bloss vergehn; könnt ein Verdienst mich dir vereinen, dürft ich in Pein für dich mich sehn! Wie du mich trafst vor schwerer Klage, o wüsste ich auch dich in Not; dass mutvoll ich ein Mühen trage, kennt ich ein Sorgen, das dir droht! - Wär das Geheimnis so geartet, das aller Welt verschweigt dein Mund? (immer geheimnisvoller) Vielleicht, dass Unheil dich erwartet, würd aller Welt es offen kund? Wär es so und dürft ich's wissen, dürft ich in meiner Macht es sehn, durch keines Droh'n sei mir's entrissen, für dich wollt' ich zu Tode gehn!		ELSA Oh, could I but prove myself worthy of you, would that I could do more than simply melt away in you; could but a service join me to you, could I but see myself suffer for you! As you found me accused of a great crime, oh would that I knew you to be in need; that I might courageously carry a burden, would that I knew of a trouble that threatens you! Is this the nature of the secret that your tongue keeps from the world? Perhaps misfortune awaits you if it is revealed to the whole world? If this were so and if I knew it, if I had it within my power, no threats would ever wrest it from me, for you I would go to my death!

ELSA (immer leidenschaftlicher) O, mach mich stolz durch dein Vertrauen, dass ich in Unwert nicht vergeh! Lass dein Geheimnis mich erschauen, dass, wer du bist, ich offen seh!		ELSA Oh make me proud through your confidence, lest I appear utterly unworthy! Let me know your secret, that I may clearly see who you are!
LOHENGRIN Ach, schweige, Elsa!		LOHENGRIN Ah, hish, Elsa!
ELSA Meiner Treue enthülle deines Adels Wert! Woher du kamst, sag ohne Reue, - durch mich sei Schweigens Kraft bewährt!		ELSA To my devotion reveal your noble worth! Tell me without remorse whence you came - may the power of silence be proved through me!
LOHENGRIN (streng und ernst einige Schritte zurücktretend) Höchstes Vertraun hast du mir schon zu danken, da deinem Schwur ich Glauben gern gewährt; wirst nimmer du vor dem Gebote wanken, hoch über alle Fraun dünkst du mich wert! (er wendet sich schnell wieder liebevoll zu Elsa) An meine Brust, du Süsse, Reine! Sei meines Herzens Glühen nah, dass mich dein Auge sanft bescheine, in dem ich all mein Glück ersah! (feurig) O gönne mir, dass mit Entzücken ich deinen Atem sauge ein: lass fest, ach! fest an mich dich drücken, dass ich in dir mög glücklich sein! Dein Lieben muss mir hoch entgelten für das, was ich um dich verliess; kein Los in Gottes weiten Welten wohl edler als das meine hiess. Böt mir der König seine Krone, ich dürfte sie mit Recht verschmähn. Das einz'ge, was mein Opfer lohne, muss ich in deiner Lieb ersehn! Drum wolle stets den Zweifel meiden, dein Lieben sei mein stolz Gewähr! Denn nicht komm ich aus Nacht und Leiden, aus Glanz und Wonne komm ich her!	Music	LOHENGRIN (sternly and gravely, moving back a few steps) You have already to thank me for the highest confidence, since I gladly belived the oath you made; if you never falter before my command, I shall consider you to be above all other women! (turning back to Elsa, he addresses her tenderly) Come to me, O sweet, pure one! Be near my ardent heart, that the eyes in which I saw all my happiness may shine upon me softly! Oh grant me that in sweet raptures I may breathe in your breath: oh, let me clasp you to me firmly, that I may be happy in you! Your love must be the highest recompense for that which I left behind for your sake; no destiny in all God's world could have been nobler than mine. If the king offered me his crown, I should rightfully reject it. The only reward for my sacrifice is your steadfast love! Thus do I ask you to put doubt from your mind, may your love be my proud recompense! For I come not from darkness and suffering, I come from splendour and delight!
ELSA Hilf Gott, was muss ich hören! Welch Zeugnis gab dein Mund! Du wolltest mich betören, nun wird mir Jammer kund! Das Loos, dem du entronnen, es war dein höchstes Glück; du kamst zu mir aus Wonnen und sehnest dich zurück! Wie soll ich Ärmste glauben, dir g'nüge meine Treu? Ein Tag wird dich mir rauben durch deiner Liebe Reu!	Music	ELSA Dear God, what is this that I hear? What testimony have you spoken? You meant to enchant me, but now misery is my lot! The destiny that you left behind was your greatest happiness; you came to me from a place of delights and you long to return there! How am I, poor wretch, to belive that my devotion will ever satisfy you? The day will come when I am robbed of you because you regret your love for me!
LOHENGRIN Halt ein, dich so zu quälen!		LOHENGRIN Do not torture yourself so!
ELSA Was quälest du mich doch! Soll ich die Tage zählen, die du mir bleibest noch? In Sorg um dein Verweilen verblüht die Wange mir, - dann wirst du mir enteilen, im Elend bleib ich hier!		ELSA It is you who are torturing me! Am I to count the number of days that you will remain with me still? My worrying about how long you will stay will drain the colour from my cheek then you will hurry from me, and I will remain here in misery!
LOHENGRIN (lebhaft) Nie soll dein Reiz entschwinden, bleibst du von Zweifel rein!		LOHENGRIN Never shall your charm diminish if you remain untainted by doubt!
ELSA Ach, dich an mich zu binden, wie sollt ich mächtig sein? Voll Zauber ist dein Wesen, durch Wunder kamst du her; - wie sollt ich da genesen, wo fänd ich dein Gewähr? - (Sie schreckt in heftigster Aufregung zusammen und hält an, wie um zu lauschen) Hörtest du nichts? Vernahmest du kein Kommen?		ELSA Ah, what power have I to bind you to me? Full of magic is your being, a miracle brought you here; how can I ever hope to be happy, how can I ever be sure of you? (She starts in agitation and pauses, as if listening) Did you hear nothing? Did you not hear anyone approaching?
LOHENGRIN Elsa!		LOHENGRIN Elsa!
ELSA Ach nein! (vor sich hinstarrend) Doch dort, - der Schwan - der Schwan! Dort kommt er auf der Wasserflut geschwommen, - du rufest ihm, - er zieht herbei den Kahn!		ELSA Ah, no! (staring ahead of her) Yes, there - the swan - the swan! There he comes, swimming across the water - you call him - he brings the boat!
LOHENGRIN Elsa! Halt ein! Beruh'ge deinen Wahn!		LOHENGRIN Elsa! Stop! Calm your madness!
ELSA Nichts kann mir Ruhe geben, dem Wahn mich nichts entreisst, als - gelt es auch mein Leben, - zu wissen - wer du sei'st!		ELSA Nothing can bring me peace, nothing can tear me from my madness, save - even if it should cost me my life - knowing who you are!
LOHENGRIN Elsa, was willst du wagen?		LOHENGRIN Elsa, what do you venture to say?
ELSA Unselig holder Mann, hör, was ich dich muss fragen! Den Namen sag mir an!		ELSA Ill-fatedly noble man! Hear the question I must ask you! Tell me your name!
LOHENGRIN Halt ein!		LOHENGRIN Stop!
ELSA Woher der Fahrt!		ELSA Whence did you come?
LOHENGRIN Weh dir!		LOHENGRIN Woe unto you!
ELSA Wie deine Art?		ELSA What is your origin?
LOHENGRIN Weh uns, was tatest du!		LOHENGRIN Woe unto us, what have you done?
(Elsa, die vor Lohengrin steht, welcher den Hintergrund im Rücken hat, gewahrt Friedrich und seine vier Genossen, welche mit gezückten Schwertern durch eine hintere Tür hereinbrechen)		(Elsa is standing in front of Lohengrin, who has his back turned to the room, and sees Friedrich and his four men appear through a back door with swords drawn)
ELSA (nach einem fürchterlichen Schrei) Rette dich! Dein Schwert, dein Schwert!		ELSA Save yourself! Your sword, your sword!
(Sie reicht das am Ruhebett angelegte Schwert hastig Lohengrin, so dass dieser schnell es aus der Scheide, welche sie hält, ziehen kann. Lohengrin streckt Friedrich, welcher nach ihm ausholt, mit einem Streiche tot zu Boden; den entsetzten Edlen entfallen die Schwerter, sie stürzen zu Lohengrins Füssen auf die Knie. Elsa, die sich an Lohengrins Brust geworfen hatte, sinkt ohnmächtig langsam an ihm zu Boden. - Langes Stillschweigen)		(She quickly passes Lohengrin the sword which is lying on the couch; she is holding the scabbard, so he is able to draw quickly. Friedrich approaches with his sword raised, and Lohengrin kills him with one mighty blow. The horrified nobles drop their swords, run to Lohengrin and fall to their knees before him. Elsa, who has thrown herself at Lohengrin's breast, sinks slowly to the floor in a faint)
LOHENGRIN (tief erschüttert, steht allein aufrecht) Weh, nun ist all unser Glück dahin! (Er neigt sich zu Elsa hinab, erhebt sie sanft und lehnt sie auf das Ruhebett)	Music Music	LOHENGRIN (He alone is left standing) Woe, now all our happiness is gone! (He bends down to Elsa, gently lifts her up and lays her on the couch)
ELSA (matt, die Augen aufschlagend) Allewiger, erbarm dich mein!		ELSA (opening her eyes) Eternal God, have mercy on me!
(Der Tag ist in allmählichem Anbruche begriffen; die tiefer herabgebrannten Kerzen drohen zu verlöschen. Auf Lohengrins Zeichen erheben sich die vier Edlen)		(Dawn is beginning to break; the candles have burnt lower and are about to go out. Lohengrin signals to the four nobles, and they stand up)
LOHENGRIN Tragt den Erschlagnen vor des Königs Gericht!		LOHENGRIN Take the slain man before the king, that he may be judged!
(Die Edlen nehmen die Leiche Friedrichs auf und entfernen sich mit ihr durch eine Tür des Hintergrundes. Lohengrin läutet an einem Glockenzuge; vier Frauen treten von links ein)		(The nobles pick up Friedrich's body and leave through a door in the background. Lohengrin pulls a bell-cord and four women enter from the left)
LOHENGRIN (zu den Frauen) Sie vor den König zu geleiten, schmückt Elsa, meine süsse Frau! Dort will ich Antwort ihr bereiten, dass sie des Gatten Art erschau.		LOHENGRIN (to the women) Adorn Elsa, my dear wife, prepare her to be led before the king! There will I answer her, that she may know her husband's origin!
(Er entfernt sich mit traurig feierlicher Haltung durch die Tür rechts. - Die Frauen geleiten Elsa, die keiner Bewegung mächtig ist, nach links ab. Der Tag hat langsam begonnen zu grauen; die Kerzen sind verloschen. Ein zusammenfallender Vorhang schliesst im Vordergrunde die ganze Szene. Wie aus dem Burghofe herauf hört man Heerhörner einen Aufruf blasen)		(With an expression od sad solemnity, he disappears through the door on the right. The women lead Elsa, who is incapable of moving, off to the left. The dawn sky is slowly brightening; the candles have gone out. Down in the courtyard heralds sound a trumpet call)
